Tattoos during the menstrual cycle
Here are some key things to know about getting a tattoo close to or during your menstrual cycle:
Pain Sensitivity
Your body may experience increased pain sensitivity during your period and premenstrual phases. Research shows that when oestrogen levels drop during this time, it directly increases pain sensitivity to the needle pricks. Client’s have reposted that tattoos feel sharper and more uncomfortable during menstruation.
Increased Bleeding
You may experience more bleeding than usual during the tattoo process. Higher prostaglandin levels during your menstrual cycle can contribute to this. It's good to be mentally prep area for potentially more frequents wiping and longer session times.
Menstrual Symptoms to Consider
Common period symptoms that may affect your tattoo experience:
Cramps (especially in lower belly, back, or thighs)
Headaches and nausea
Fatigue and dizziness
Increased sensitivity
You can still be tattooed whilst menstruating, we have some tips which may help:
Eat a good balanced meal before your tattoo to maintain energy levels. Take snacks for breaks as and when you need them.
Stay hydrated before during and after.
Pack pain relief (Ibuprofen) and or heating packs to help with cramps.
You can listen to music or podcast whilst being tattooed, this can be a good tool to distract from any discomfort.
Deep breathing techniques may help with distracting you from the discomfort of being tattooed.
Ask for breaks as and when needed.
If you suffer with the following it may be best to book on another date:
If you have intense menstrual symptoms.
You experience significant crams or nausea.
If you feel you will not be able to tolerate further pain and discomfort during your period.
Communicate with your Artist
Your Artist can adjust their approach and schedule in more breaks if needed. They will be prepared for the potential of increased bleeding to the area they are tattooing.
Getting a tattoo whilst menstruating is perfectly safe, it is about managing comfort and pain levels. Listen to your body and speak up if you are not feeling well enough.
